The local village contains two boulangerie’s for your fresh bread every morning. English newspapers are available at the Tabac, There is a small shop and mini supermarket for provisions, a chemist, and post office. Should you be longing for English fish & chips! There are three fishing rods located in the garden shed, with floats, weights and hooks. To fish in France you need to obtain a fishing permit, these are 10 Euros per person per day or 30 Euros foe one person for a week. The fishing permits may be purchased at The Bar Fontaine in Mael Carhaix.
Should you require maggots as bait, these can be bought at the Decathlon Store as you enter the town Carhaix Plouguer.
The local water park with the children’s play area and man made beach is one location to fish. The other location is the Nantes Brest Canal; this is also an excellent spot for walking along.
The nearest supermarket is 10 minutes by car - “Intermarche”
Directions: From the end of our private road turn right (left will take you to Mael Carhaix), one mile you come to a T junction, road N164, turn left, and continue for approx 4 miles in the direction of Rostrenen, under a bridge, to the roundabout, here you will see “Intermarhe” on the left.
These are just a few places that Linda and I have managed to visit, that we would recommend and are no further than one hours drive. I would presume that you have a map if not one can be found in the book shelf.
The two nearest towns (in opposite directions) Rostrenen and Carhaix Plouguer offer good restaurants, and shopping.
The beach at Pentrez Plage is excellent and safe; it is on the west coast, using the N 164 road towards Brest, then head for Chateaulin – also a place to visit.
In the same direction you will pass signs for Chateauneuf-du-faou a small town where you can obtain boat rides up and down the river. Quimper is a must; this walled medieval city has fantastic shops, bars, restaurants and cathedral.
Local street markets can be found in the mornings at:
Rostrenen – Tuesdays
Callac – Wednesdays
Huelgoat – Thursdays
Carhaix Plouguer – Saturdays
